ANSI/ASSP Z359.14- 2021 Self-Retracting Devices (SRL’s):  An Overview of Change 2014 vs. 2021 Revision

This presentation will outline the changes coming from the updates to the ANSI/ASSP Z359.14 standard.  Participants will learn about the new design, testing, and performance requirements of SRL’s certified to the Z359.14 standard.  When participants see “Z359.14-2021” compliant labeled on future SRL’s they will understand what criteria the product had to meet to “earn” that certification.

Learning Outcomes

1. What a “Class 1 and Class 2” SRL is and what characteristics do each class exhibit.
2. When and why some SRL’s have energy absorbers on the lifeline.  How does this affect safety when working near sharp leading edges
3. Recognize existence of SRL labels containing fall clearance charts and the importance of them.
4. Effective date of the standard updates and its effect on existing equipment certified to previous revisions of Z359.14.

Jason Giefer, Application Engineer, 3M Fall Protection

Jason is an Application Engineer for 3M’s Fall Protection division.  He is passionate about keeping workers at heights safe.  This philosophy of keeping workers happy spans a 20 + year career in the fall protection equipment industry.

Participating in hundreds of work site visits assessing fall hazards and providing solutions afford him an understanding of many challenges safety managers and workers encounter in real life work settings.  He supports 3M’s domestic and international fall protection teams.  Additionally, he works as a member of new product development teams to ensure newly developed products meet the real-life needs of end users.  Jason a maintains strong knowledge base of the applicable fall protection regulatory standards, such as OSHA and ASNI.
